How To Make The Perfect Cup Of Matcha Green Tea

A simple guide to a very special Japanese institution

Matcha green tea is a traditional Japanese beverage known for its health benefits and vibrant green color. Uji, a city south of Kyoto, is commonly held to produce the finest matcha tea, particularly ceremonial grade matcha.

To make the perfect cup of matcha green tea, heat your water to 176F (80C) temperature. For a softer, more mellow flavor, use lower temperature water: 158F (70C). To intensify or decrease the depth of flavor, you can increase or decrease the quantity of Matcha powder to suite your palate. Boiling hot water above 176F (80C) woud destroy the very delicate and subtle taste profile of your matcha tea. Honestly, if you spend your hard earned cash on the best quality ceremonial grade matcha tea, why spoil it?

Once the water is at your preferred temperature, add a teaspoon of Uji ceremonial grade matcha powder into a bowl, I’ve never know the fine ceremonial grade matcha to clump in the water. But if you use a lower grade matcha powder you may need to sift your tea, so this step is optional. Add a small amount of hot water to the bowl and whisk the powder until it forms a smooth paste.

Next, pour more hot water into the bowl and whisk vigorously to create a frothy consistency. Enjoy the rich flavor and numerous health benefits of matcha, such as improved metabolism and concentration. This Japanese organic matcha is a great alternative to traditional steeped green tea, as it contains the entire tea leaf and provides a more concentrated dose of antioxidants.

Importance of using a bamboo whisk

Matcha whisk is an essential tool when it comes to making matcha green tea. The bamboo whisk helps to mix the finely ground green tea powder in the water, creating a smooth consistency and creamy paste. Using a bamboo whisk not only helps to oxygenate the matcha but also ensures that the powder is properly dissolved, resulting in a perfectly blended and delicious cup of matcha green tea. Matcha is great for providing a boost of energy and antioxidants, so it’s important to use the right tools to make the most out of this superfood.
